Quick update. Ernie--the electrician--has signed off on the electrical design elements of the Utility Tray (and Camp Kitchen) power system. Another one of the milestones on my "things to worry about" list crossed off. We still have to test the mechanical portion, though I am not as worried about that as much as we can adjust as needed if any issues come up in testing.
On the not so great news side, the first quote for the aluminum tray extrusion tooling is almost 2.5 x what I had estimated. I've done quite a few extrusions over the years but nothing this size, and they really jack up the price as the size goes up. Still waiting on more quotes to come back and there are other options we can look at like more conventional folded sheet metal fabrication.
Marching on!

Progress is good. But aluminum is also good. I’m not sure what the final price delta would be choosing aluminum for the slide tray, but this is a one time purchase for me, so I’d like to see aluminum. Especially down here in humid (and rusty) Florida. Looking forward to further updates. Thanks.

Any update on the extrusion options? Any other news? Thanks Nothing "exciting" to report. Still getting quotes back for the electrical parts and some of the machined PVC stuff. Pretty routine.

2. Weekend use. This would be for activities like fishing, boating, hiking, biking, photography, bird watching or the beach etc. Activities where you might want to have gear prepacked and stored on a shelf in your garage so if Saturday morning you are going to the lake/beach and you want to take some nature pictures, you grab your beach tote that has beach towels, sun block, etc. and your photography tote that has your tripod, lighting gear, etc. and pop them into the gear tunnel and go. Next weekend you're going to do some boating so you load the tote with life jackets and other boating "stuff", and your fishing tackle tote. You get the idea. I'll save somebody having to ask. Yes I am looking at a matching ice chest version as well. View Attachment View Attachment View AttachmentView Attachment View Attachment View AttachmentView Attachment View Attachment View AttachmentView Attachment View AttachmentThese are an earlier version but still demonstrate the concept. They would store in your garage and serve double duty as storage for your hobby / activity "stuff" as mentioned. They are functional and look cool stacked on a shelf as they take design cues from the R1T. They use the slide rail already installed in the truck but NOT the Utility tray. They are oddly shaped to use as much of the space as possible--often with "soft goods" as you mentioned. They will have aluminum lids--possible color matched to the R1T--with rubber seals, stainless hinges, and magnetic closures. I know you just posted the totes about fitting in the bed, but are the 'tunnel shaped' totes still in the running as something that could be made to work with the SK00TR later? I've got a plethora of square totes, but nothing that would fit, and utilize the tunnel shape quite so effectively as these seem like they would.

I've got a plethora of square totes, but nothing that would fit, and utilize the tunnel shape quite so effectively as these seem like they would. Custom totes for the tunnel make more sense than totes for the bed would. I know that seems counter intuitive as it seems like making 6 for the bed would be more volume than 2 for the tunnel, but in this case it's the time it takes to mold 6 vs 2. People are patient enough to wait 2 months. Not so much 6 months. So short answer, yes I am still looking at the gear tunnel totes as a potential product for the gear tray. I have a few other items I'm looking at as well. Once the Utility Tray is in production we can all put our heads together and talk about cool add on items to use with it.

The slide out tray is going to be great, custom totes that maximize the unique shape of the tunnel are going to make it amazing! I personally would buy several totes in 2 sizes. Half Tray and Quarter Tray. I currently use a Dewalt tool box to hold tie down straps, recovery gear, and tools. It fits in the tunnel and is way better than nothing but there is so much wasted space around it and I would love a better way to separate and organize things. I can see Quarter size totes being used for tools and tie downs. Half size being used for adventure specific gear that can live on a shelf in the garage and swap into the tray depending on the adventure or need of the moment. I can also see an empty tote or either size living in on the slide out to hold things like groceries or plants. So many awesome possibilities and I am excited for all of them!

Any updates? I am wearing out the ‘new’ on my gear tunnel with ‘work truck’ uses… a slide out would beat the crap out of ‘throw it in the gear tunnel hole’. Thanks.

This slide out utility tray is probably the thing I am looking forward to the most. Cant wait to see the final product! The camp kitchen will be a nice addition as well.
